Mt. Cho Oyu Expedition (Tibet) 2024 & 2025.
Cho Oyu is the sixth highest mountain in the world at 8201 m. above sea level. Cho Oyu lies in the Himalayas and is 20 km west of Mount Everest, at the border between Tibet and Nepal. Cho Oyu means "Turquoise Goddess" in Tibetan.
Cho Oyu was first attempted in 1952 by an expedition organized and financed by the Joint Himalayan Committee of Great Britain as preparation for an attempt on Mount Everest the following year. The expedition was led by Eric Shipton and included Tom Bourdillon, but technical difficulties at an ice cliff above 6,650 m proved beyond their abilities.
Just a few kilometers west of Cho Oyu is Nangpa La (5,716m), a glaciated pass that serves as the main trading route between the Tibetans and the Khumbu's Sherpas. Due to its proximity to this pass and the generally moderate slopes of the standard northwest ridge route, some climbers consider Cho Oyu to be the easiest 8,000-meter peak, to climb and it is a popular objective for professionally guided parties.

Im September 2019 brach ich mit SKA zum Cho Oyu auf. Mein Ziel war es, den Berg ohne Flaschensauerstoff zu besteigen und anschließend auf Ski abzufahren.
Schon vor meiner Abreise war ich sehr angetan von Tsering Sherpa und Nima Sherpa. Alle meine unzähligen Fragen per E-Mail wurden sehr schnell beantwortet. Am Flughafen holte mich Tsering ab. Er zeigte mir in den nächsten Tagen Kathmandu und ich war beeindruckt von seinem exzellenten Englisch. Seine Fähigkeit für das Wohlergehen seiner Kunden zu sorgen, stellte er besonders unter Beweis, als er sich liebevoll um meine Erkältung mit Fieber kümmerte. Er päppelte mich rechtzeitig wieder auf, so dass ich ab Lhasa mit der Akklimatisierung beginnen konnte und mit dem Rest der Gruppe mithalten konnte.
Am Berg selbst war Tsering nicht dabei. Das ist der Part von Nima. Auch Nima spricht sehr gut Englisch, was es für einen Touristen dessen Nepali Kenntnisse sich auf „Danke“ beschränken, sehr viel einfacher macht. Nima handelte immer sehr überlegt, er macht solche Touren nicht zum ersten Mal – das merkt man deutlich. Es war alles top geplant. Selbst Unwägbarkeit wie eine verschüttete Straße und ein zu kleiner Jeep für meine Ski, konnten die beiden nicht aufhalten, meine Ski sicher zum Berg zu transportieren. Zum ersten Mal hatte Nima einen Gast mit Ski dabei. Er ließ sich auf diese Besonderheit genauso ein wie auf alle anderen Eigenheiten seiner Gäste. Ich war in kein starres Korsett eingebunden, sondern konnte meine eigenen Vorstellungen von der Tour miteinbringen. Ein kleines bisschen hat man seine Anspannung aber dann doch gemerkt als ich meine Schwünge an den Hängen des Cho Oyu gemacht habe. Im Nachhinein hat es sich jedenfalls zu einem Running Gag zwischen uns entwickelt, dass ich oben am Gipfel gesagt habe, dass mir meine Ski ebenso viel Kraft verleihen, wie anderen eine Flasche Sauerstoff. Dass die Tour mit der Besteigung ohne Flaschensauerstoff und der Skiabfahrt vom Gipfel bis zu Lager 1 ein voller Erfolg war, lag ganz maßgeblich an Nima, Tsering und dessen Frau Sara. Zurück in Kathmandu wurde ordentlich gefeiert und wir hatten noch viel Spaß bei dem ein oder anderen nepalesischen Bier.
Ich hoffe sehr, dass ich eines Tages wieder mit den beiden unterwegs sein kann.
